Rangers: John Souttar development expected in Holland after injury news

Rangers’ John Souttar is set to be handed the chance to excel for Scotland as a result of injury issues suffered by Norwich City defender Grant Hanley, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported in its print edition [20 March, page 74] that Souttar will be given a chance as Scotland prepare to face the Netherlands on 22 March.

With the European Championships in Germany this summer quickly arriving, Souttar will be keen to impress Steve Clarke and earn his place in the squad.

Will John Souttar go to the Euros after Rangers performances?

Souttar’s performances at Ibrox this season have earned him mixed reviews, such has been his inconsistency, after Stuart McCall described him as “superb” in the Europa League defeat to Benfica as Philippe Clement’s side crashed out.

However, Stevie Clifford of Four Lads Had a Dream insisted the defender has been “disappointing” this season after his performance in the shock defeat to Motherwell, questioning his long-term role in the first team.

With the defender set to be handed an opportunity to impress Clarke against the Netherlands, he will need to make the most of that chance in the absence of Hanley and prove he belongs in with a shout of going to Germany.

With the European Championships coming up at the end of the season, the defender will want to see a notable step up in his displays to increase his chances of being part of the Scotland squad to face Germany in the opening game.
