Rangers avert £4m mistake as James Sands receives harsh reality check

James Sands’ departure from Rangers marks a harsh reality check for the midfielder and a positive turn for the club.

Despite arriving with potential, the American struggled to find his footing in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad, often deployed out of position due to injury crises.

His return to New York City FC after an unsuccessful loan stint at Ibrox highlights the challenges he faced in adapting to the Scottish Premiership’s demands.

Sands regrets not doing better at Rangers

After receiving an international snub, Sands said: “A lot of time with a national team, it’s just not something you can control day to day.

“I can’t be calling him every day. He’s not watching me in training every day. So you find a way to sort of put it in the back of your mind and focus on how you’re playing with your club team.

“I am always trying to get called up to the national team, but I understand now that most of those guys are playing in Europe. So it does make it hard playing in the MLS.”

It’s always going to be the coach’s decision for the national team. And he’s always going to place a little more value on the guys who are playing in the top European leagues, which I would too. That’s how the world works.

“All I can do is put in good performances here and hopefully they notice.”

Rangers, on the other hand, are arguably better off without Sands.

Rangers made a good financial transfer decision

His departure not only saved the club £4million, but it also freed up resources and space for more impactful signings.

Sands’ struggles to assert himself in the team underscore the depth and quality already present in Gers’ midfield, suggesting that his absence won’t be keenly felt.

Moving forward, the Ibrox outfit can focus on strengthening areas of the squad where they need reinforcement, confident in the knowledge that Sands’ departure represents both a financial saving and an opportunity to improve the team’s overall performance on the pitch.

It’s also good to see that the people involved in bringing him to Ibrox are no longer at the club.

In other Rangers news, a player has admitted that Celtic made an effort to sign him after he left Ibrox.
