Rangers: Andy Halliday labels Gers fan’s claim ‘mental’ as controversy rumbles on
Andy Halliday has labelled a Rangers fan’s solution over how to deal with the postponed fixture against Dundee as “mental”.
After the supporter suggested on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Monday (18 March) that the Gers should be given all three points after the game was called off, the pundit said he understands the frustration after the “messy” situation that unfolded.
But he asked what would happen to the previous games postponed at Dens Park this season as he believes it wouldn’t be the right thing to hand out points to any clubs.
“You described it as mental and I’m going to back you,” said Halliday. “That claim I do believe is mental to be giving Rangers three points for it. I can understand the frustration absolutely, it all looked a bit messy yesterday.
“You’re calling off a game that’s live on Sky 90 minutes before kick-off and it’s not great for either club. But what are you doing to the three teams that got games postponed at Dens Park?
“It’s unfortunate, it’s not great timing, especially with the games that are coming thick and fast over the split, but no, I certainly don’t think points should be handed to any club.”
Rangers and Dundee postponement not a good look
It certainly isn’t a great look for the SPL that a game is being postponed for a waterlogged pitch in 2024, with the resources that should be there to prevent these issues.
It’s actually quite embarrassing because these incidents are extremely rare in top divisions across Europe, but it’s happened far too often at Dens Park.
While there is going to be an investigation into the matter, it wouldn’t be right to hand Rangers the three points because that undermines the competition and wouldn’t be fair.
But these situations simply can’t be allowed to continue and the league needs to work with the likes of Dundee to find a resolution to their pitch problems.
It won’t help the Gers at all in their pursuit of the SPL title but, hopefully, it will help bring the league forward and prevent disappointing incidents like this occurring again in the future.
