Neil Lennon calls for investigation after what happened in ‘unacceptable’ Rangers situation
Neil Lennon believes it’s “unacceptable” that the Rangers game against Dundee on Sunday (17 March) was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Speaking on PLZ Soccer on Monday (18 March), the pundit said Philippe Clement made some pertinent points about the impact it had on his Gers squad as they arrived at Dens Park before the game was eventually called off.
Lennon added that there should be an investigation into the matter and an explanation of what happened provided as there should be the resources available in Scottish football to ensure incidents like this don’t happen.
“I think it’s unacceptable in 2024 that we’ve got a Premier League game called off because of a waterlogged pitch,” said Lennon.
“Philippe made some pertinent points. You’re going into that game, all the energy, all the thought processes, you roll up at the stadium ready to play and you’re told that the game is cancelled. It’s not good enough.
“There should be an investigation into this and an explanation why. He is right. In Scotland of all places, we do get a lot of rain up here, but surely we should have the resources now to be able to deal with that.”
Neil Lennon view backs up Rangers’ right to be frustrated
The fact that Lennon has spoken in favour of Rangers on this matter shows just how poorly the decision was to call the game off so late.
There is no reason why the Gers players – and many of the fans – were allowed to make the trip up to Dundee before the referee deemed that the pitch was unplayable.
While it seems as though the staff at Dens Park did all they could to ensure the fixture could go ahead, the authorities need to look into what happened and ensure improvements are made for future matches.
It was incredibly disappointing for Clement and his players to not be able to play the game to try and earn their place back at the top of the SPL table.
But they will get that opportunity whenever the fixture is rearranged and perhaps they could have some more players available by the time it comes around.
