Rangers: Lee McCulloch moots Jack Butland award as ‘level above’ Celtic verdict shared

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland has got to be in consideration for the Player of the Year award this season.

That is according to former Gers ace Lee McCulloch, with the pundit suggesting that the number one has been one of the club’s best players in the current campaign.

McCulloch also believes Celtic captain Callum McGregor should be nominated for the award for his displays under Brendan Rodgers.

“He’s got to be,” McCullough said on The Football Show (15 March) when discussing a potential Player of the Year nomination for Butland. “He’s been one of Rangers’ best players this season, 100%, he’s got to be in the mix.

“And Callum McGregor, even with his injury in the last couple of weeks, I still think he’ll be in the mix. I just think he’s he’s a level above everybody else.”

Butland had massive gloves to fill upon his arrival last summer, with the goalkeeper coming in to replace the legendary Allan McGregor following his retirement from the game.

But the new man between the sticks did not let the pressure get to him, with Butland doing a superb job at Ibrox this season.

He has made countless world-class saves across the various competitions that the Gers have been taking part in, helping them clinch the League Cup trophy earlier in the season.

And the number one will also have further silverware on his mind under Philippe Clement, with the Glasgow outfit still in with a chance of a domestic treble.

They have just been knocked out of the Europa League by Benfica, but Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup glory is very much still on the cards.

The Gers are two points ahead of fierce rivals Celtic in the former, and will take on Hearts in the semi-finals of the latter.
