Rangers: Lee McCulloch drops ‘monumental achievement’ verdict after Benfica defeat
Lee McCulloch has dropped his verdict on the potential “monumental achievement” that Rangers can still reach despite their Europa League defeat to Benfica on Thursday (14 March).
The Gers were knocked out of Europe after a 1-0 defeat to the Portuguese giants at Ibrox, having drawn the first leg in Lisbon 2-2 on Thursday 7 March.
Despite this, Philippe Clement’s side are still in with a chance of completing a domestic treble at Ibrox, having already lifted the League Cup and in contention to lift the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup.
Speaking via PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show on Friday (15 March), McCulloch said: “I think today there’ll be a lot of people disappointed in Ibrox, fans disappointed but you’ve got to take the positives that they’re still going for the treble, which would be a monumental achievement.”
Can Philippe Clement complete the Treble in his first season at Rangers?
If Clement is able to claim three trophies in his first season at Ibrox would be very impressive. And adding to that, the fact that the Belgian took over from Michael Beale in October, makes it all the more incredible.
Two points ahead of Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, the Gers could lift just their second league title in the last decade, with the Hoops being largely dominant in Scotland.
However, there seems to have been a shift since the arrival of Clement, with all the momentum swaying in Rangers’ favour, leaving Celtic fans very frustrated by Brendan Rodgers and his team.
As well as beating them to the top spot, claiming the Treble would anger Rangers’ rivals all the more, much to the joy of the Ibrox faithful.

There is still plenty that must happen for Rangers to win three trophies this season including the fact they must overcome Hearts in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup to reach the final.
Although history would suggest that the Gers will win, going unbeaten against Hearts in the last 13 meetings, everyone will be aware of the threat that Lawrence Shankland possesses.
