Rangers v Benfica: Ally McCoist stunned by Scott Wright in Europa League loss

Ally McCoist was stunned by what Scott Wright did in the Rangers v Benfica Europa League clash at Ibrox on 14 March.

Both sides went into the clash having scored two each in the first leg and it was Benfica who scored the all important goal to win 1-0.

However, before they scored, Wright teed up Cyriel Dessers for what was a glorious goal-scoring chance.

Speaking on TNT Sports, McCoist said (14 March, 6:51pm): “Magnificent from Wright.

“I’ll tell you what, the vision to see Dessers had peeled off was first class.

“It’s a good challenge.”

Rangers pay the price for not taking chances v Benfica

Both sides showcased their strengths and weaknesses over the two-leg Europa League clash, ultimately leading to a closely contested tie.

While they displayed moments of brilliance, it was Benfica who capitalised on their opportunities more effectively, securing a crucial away goal and ultimately emerging victorious with a 1-0 win.

However, the balance of play throughout both legs suggests that the teams were relatively evenly matched, making a case for them to be considered level after two legs.

Extra time would have been a fair way to determine the winner, allowing both sides further opportunity to assert their dominance and potentially break the deadlock.

Philippe Clement would have undoubtedly gleaned valuable tactical insights from these encounters, which could prove beneficial in future European competitions and domestic fixtures, particularly in their pursuit of outperforming Celtic for the title.
