Rangers: ‘Absolutely outstanding’ Scott Wright wows BBC pundit in surprise star show vs Benfica

Scott Wright’s driving run and pass to Cyriel Dessers as Rangers were beaten 1-0 by Benfica on Thursday night was branded “absolutely outstanding” by Stuart McCall.

The former Ibrox midfielder and interim boss reacted live on BBC Sportsound on 14 March after the Scottish winger produced one of a number of excellent bursts through the midfield early the second half, charging away from two challenges before sliding a ball into the striker who took a touch but saw his shot deflected wide.

Steven Thompson called it the best chance of the night for the home side, and there arguably wasn’t a better one until the final whistle, in an unexpectedly impressive display from the 26-year-old.

McCall said (6.50pm): “Brilliant by Scott Wright, absolutely outstanding. Took the ball on the half-turn, slipped Dessers [in]. Took a wee bit longer but it was on target, it was going in.”

Thompson added: “That’s the best chance that they’ve had in the game so far. As Stuart says, the way that Scott Wright received the ball on the half-turn and opened up his body so he could go forward with it was brilliant, then used his pace.”

Scott Wright excellent at Ibrox in rare Rangers start for Philippe Clement

The extensive injury problems in the Rangers squad opened the door for Wright to come in for just his third start since November.

Dujon Sterling had been vital in an advanced role away in Lisbon, scoring his first goal for the club, but was then ruled out after going off hurt in the Scottish Cup win at Hibs.

And yet it was Wright who was the leading attacking threat for the Light Blues in Glasgow, perhaps thanks to being relatively fresh compared to those who have started regularly of late.

Twice in the first half he drove forward with the ball and beat multiple Benfica defenders in the process, setting up a shot from Tom Lawrence which almost squirmed in through the keepers’ legs.

If a breakthrough was to come it looked likely to be through Wright, and he almost delivered it but Dessers decided not to take the shot first time for what turned out to be the best chance.

He might not be around long-term but with a Hampden semi-final against Hearts on the horizon once more the wide man would likely have been favoured there given his impressive record at the national stadium, and after standing out in Europe he delivered a reminder of what he can do despite being peripheral in Philippe Clement’s squad.

In other Rangers news, an Ibrox exit deal is now wanted before the season is finished.
