Daily Record scores Nicolas Raskin 1/10 for Rangers performance in defeat v Benfica at Ibrox

Nicolas Raskin was unable to make an impact at Ibrox as Rangers were dumped out of the UEFA Europa League by Benfica.

After a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash at the Estadio Da Luz (7 March), the Gers would have felt confident of advancing to the quarter-finals on home soil.

However, it was not to be as Benfica claimed a 1-0 win at Ibrox on Thursday (14 March) to deny Philippe Clement a fairytale European run during his debut season in Scotland.

Rafa Silva scored what proved to be the decisive goal in the 66th minute, and after he was initially flagged offside, a VAR review overturned the decision as Benfica’s top scorer was shown to have still been inside his own half when he was played through.

Having started on the bench, Raskin was introduced in the 85th minute and although he wasn’t on the pitch for long, the Daily Record have slammed his performance, handing him a 1/10 match rating and claiming that he had “little effect” when he came on (page 46, 15 March).

Nicolas Raskin justified Philippe Clement’s decision

When a late substitute has such little time on the pitch, they will usually be handed an ‘N/A’ for their match rating. Therefore, the fact that Raskin was slammed with a 1/10 demonstrates how poor he was after being introduced.

The 23-year-old replaced Mohammed Diomande as the hosts looked for a late leveller, and after his contributions across his 11 minutes on the pitch, it is hard to disagree with the Daily Record’s assessment.

As per Sofascore, although the Belgian did complete 100 per cent of his passes, that was all he offered, as he failed to register a shot at goal, create any opportunities for his teammates, play any key passes or make any defensive contributions.

When chasing a late goal you need to throw everything forward, and Raskin failed to contribute anything of meaning as the Gers chased what might have proved to be their biggest goal of the season.
