Ally McCoist drools over James Tavernier after what Rangers star did

Ally McCoist has praised Rangers captain James Tavernier as “magnificent” after his achievements for the club during his time at Ibrox.

Tavernier is now just one goal behind all-time top scorer McCoist when it comes to European goals for the club, but failed to hit the tally as the Bears crashed out of the Europa League thanks to a 1-0 defeat to Benfica at Ibrox on Thursday night.

But before the game while live on TNT Sports (14 March, 17:28), McCoist reacted to an interview where Tavernier said he’d wave at McCoist if he scored which allowed the Scotland legend to heap praise on the right-back.

“In all seriousness, fantastic,” he said. “Unbelievable. I mean, the goals and the assists.

“It’s brilliant. It really is brilliant. The position he plays, going forward. Listen, people will always be critical about some of the defensive work but that’s a discussion for another day.

“That man has been nothing short of magnificent for Glasgow Rangers, he really has. As I say the way he plays the game, some of his free-kicks, some of his deliveries, arriving at the back post. Top class.”

Is James Tavernier a Rangers legend?

There are very few players that are genuinely in with a shout of being an Ibrox legend, because that isn’t a term that gets banded about too easily.

But Tavernier is certainly someone who has a genuine case to answer considering his 160+ goals for the club, being the captain when the team lifted No. 55 and his contributions during that incredible run to the Europa League final.

McCoist is someone who knows all about the club’s history, having been such a big part of it but also having been a fan forever, and if he sees Tavernier as a legend then everyone should.

As Ally says, there will be some who will question his defensive credentials but when you look at his body of work as a player then there aren’t too many who match up.

He deserves all the credit in the world and will no doubt go down in history as one of the best to play in his position for the club.
