Rangers: James Tavernier reveals what he heard about fans at Ibrox for early Benfica kick off
Rangers fans could have sold out Ibrox three times over despite the early kick off against Benfica, James Tavernier was revealed.
The Gers captain told TNT Sports ahead of kick off (14 March) that the “electric” atmosphere in Glasgow would be vital for the players as they come in level after a 2-2 draw in Lisbon.
Although the timing is less than ideal he shared what he had heard on the level of demand to be in the stands for another Rangers European night.
Tavernier said: “And credit to the fans because I got told we could have sold the stadium out times three so to have that support, you want to hear that.
“So a big thank you to the fans for the support they’re going to bring. Early kick-off, yeah we’re looking forward to it. All the boys are ready.”
Rangers fans turn out in force despite European kick off time
Supporters weren’t overjoyed by the news that the crucial return leg in Scotland had been scheduled for an awkward early slot.
But it is little surprise that there was no threat of then not turning up in numbers to get behind Philippe Clement’s side for a big occasion.
The effect of the “quite incredible” home crowd at Ibrox has been tipped by Derek Ferguson to be a crucial factor in what is likely to be an edgy encounter with the Portuguese giants.

Two seasons ago it proved to be exactly that as the likes of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig were overcome on the way to the final.
And a repeat performance will likely be needed with Rangers so depleted thanks to endless injury concerns in recent weeks, although Todd Cantwell should be able to feature off the bench after recovering from his lay off.
The Englishman, along with Fabio Silva, John Lundstram, and captain Tavernier have been highlighted as key men for this game by Hibs’ Jair Tavares, and they will all likely need to have a say to keep up the momentum on three fronts.
In other Rangers news, a senior Gers man has been invited to jet out and sign a deal to see him leave the club.
