Ally McCoist left absolutely stunned by what he saw in Rangers vs Benfica live on air

Ally McCoist was left stunned by one moment he spotted during the Europa League clash between Rangers and Benfica at Ibrox on Thursday evening.

The two sides battled as Benfica claimed a 1-0 win in the second leg of their last 16 tie to eliminate Rangers, but one moment in the first half caught co-commentator McCoist by surprise in particular.

The home side had a corner in the first half and once it was cleared Benfica were able to counter attack before the Rangers defence were able to recover and prevent any damage occurring.

But speaking on commentary live on TNT Sports (14 March, 17:58) McCoist noticed something that he said was “unbelievable”.

“I can’t believe Rangers defensively,” he said.

“When that corner was taken they had nobody, and I mean nobody back on the halfway line.

“It’s unbelievable.”

Rangers lived life on the edge

Philippe Clement has come into Ibrox this season and made the team a front-footed, attack-minded team which is exactly what fans have wanted.

Benfica were arguably the favourites coming into the tie when the draw was made initially, but Rangers more than held their own over the course of the two legs and it’s because of moments like this.

Clement made the team fearless and backed the players to do their jobs, while encouraging them to be attack-minded and cause the opposition problems rather than worrying too much about what they could do.

It’s a mindset that has seen the team overturn a huge deficit in the title race to catch and overtake Celtic in just a few months, and it should be applauded.

Was it a risk? Absolutely. And it was ultimately the reason that the team lost the game as they were punished in the second half from a similar moment. But they usually pay off, and that’s why the fans love him.
