Rangers injury news as Dujon Sterling update shared ahead of Benfica tie in Europa League
Joshua Barrie is hopeful the injury sustained by Dujon Sterling against Hibernian is not too serious after the Rangers ace was seen walking around at full-time.
Sterling hobbled off during the first half of the Gers’ 2-0 Scottish Cup win on Sunday (10 March), three days after initially injuring the same hamstring against Benfica.
Philippe Clement said after the game he is unsure if the 24-year-old will be fit for the second leg with Benfica on Thursday (14 March), but he was at least walking freely at Easter Road.
“Sterling was walking at the end of the game so you hope his injury isn’t serious,” Rangers Review reporter Barrie posted on his personal Twitter page [10 March].
Dujon Sterling in race to be fit for Rangers v Benfica
Exactly why Sterling started against Hibernian is a mystery, having been seen with an icepack on his hamstring just a few days earlier.
That is not speaking with the benefit of hindsight, either – it was clear that the Englishman was in need of a breather.
Clement may now pay the price as Sterling, who was on the scoresheet in Portugal, is surely a major doubt for the return leg versus Benfica.
Should that be the case, it would be cruel on the player as he has grown in confidence and justified his starting spot at Estadio da Luz.
Ross McCausland came on for Sterling against Hibs but also went off in the second half, so the injury problems are mounting for Clement.
The good news is that the international break is fast approaching, but before then are huge games with Benfica and Dundee.
Clement will have to make full use of his squad – what remains of it, at least – for those two games later this week.
