Rangers: Michael Stewart called out by Derek Clark over comments made v Hibernian on Viaplay

Derek Clark called out Michael Stewart after the Viaplay commentator disagreed that Rangers should have been awarded a penalty versus Hibernian.

Referee Steven McLean pointed to the spot after Dujon Sterling was touched by Jordan Obita inside the Hibs box, only for James Tavernier’s spot-kick to be kept out.

John Lundstram was first on the rebound to give the Gers the lead, which Fabio Silva added to late on in a 2-0 win, but Stewart did not feel it should have been a pen.

Speaking on Viaplay’s live coverage, Stewart was adamant that a spot-kick should not have been awarded and even doubled down on that verdict after seeing multiple replays, but the broadcaster’s three pundits all felt otherwise.

Taking to Twitter, Rangers Review journalist Derek Clark posted on his personal page [10 March]: “Alan Hutton, Marvin Bartley and Neil Lennon all saying the Sterling penalty was the correct call. What game is Michael Stewart watching?”

Rangers remain on course for domestic treble

Obita may not have shoved Sterling over forcefully, but contact was made. No matter how minimal the contact was, there was contact nonetheless.

Sterling did very well to get across his man and instigate the contact, which duly arrived. Obita only had himself to blame for trying to halt the Rangers winger.

Tavernier could not take full advantage as his penalty, after a stuttered run-up, was saved by David Marshall. However, Lundstram did very well to follow up and bundle in the opener.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement has turned things around at Rangers

Silva’s strike late on sealed a passage through to the semi-finals after the home side had a couple of players sent off.

The only blemish for Philippe Clement involved Sterling, who hobbled off in the first half with a hamstring problem, while replacement Ross McCausland also picked up a knock.

Rangers got the job done against potentially tricky opponents, and the domestic treble bid remains alive and well.
