Rangers: Connor Goldson slammed live on BBC by Billy Dodds after what he did v Hibernian

Billy Dodds slammed Rangers pair Connor Goldson and Jack Butland for their mix-up that nearly proved costly during the game with Hibernian.

Butland failed to properly control a pass back to him from Goldson and it was pounced on by Myziane Maolida, who hit the outside of the post with his attempt.

The Gers goalkeeper was ultimately to blame for failing to get rid of the ball, but the pass back to him from his team-mate was not ideal.

“What are they doing?” former Rangers striker Dodds said on BBC Sportscene [10 March, 5:48pm].

“The pass back to Jack Butland, Connor Goldson has had a bad time of it recently. Butland then takes too many touches. That’s a real let-off.”

Rangers went on to win 2-0 in a match where Hibs finished with nine men at Easter Road.

Jack Butland and Rangers let off versus Hibernian

Butland has been sensational for Rangers since arriving as a free agent last summer, so he is allowed to make one or two mistakes.

Thankfully, this error did not lead to a goal and no harm was done as John Lundstram opened the scoring for the Gers not long after.

Goldson has, as Dodds pointed out, not had the best time of things of late and this mix-up would not have done his confidence any good.

There is no harm in playing out from the back – indeed, it is very much encouraged in the modern game – but this is what can happen.

Had Maolida been able to wrap his boot around the ball a little more, it would have been Hibs who had taken the lead.

Ultimately, though, no harm was done and lessons will be learned going forward.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement must take his share of the blame for what happened in the first half against Hibernian.
