Rangers: BBC Sport journalist shares ‘self-destruct’ verdict after what happened in Hibernian

Hibernian players Jordan Obita and Nathan Moriah-Welsh “hit the self-destruct button” against Rangers at Easter Road.

That is according to BBC Sport journalist Kheredine Idessane after the pair were both sent off in the Scottish Cup clash.

The Gers ran out 2-0 winners in the quarter-final meeting on Sunday (10 March), with John Lundstram and Fabio Silva finding the back of the net.

“From a Hibs point of view, they’ll regret three mad second-half minutes in which two players hit the self-destruct button to get themselves sent off and completely ruin any chances of their side forcing extra-time,” Idessane wrote for BBC Sport.

“At 1-0 with 11 men, this was a contest. With nine on the field, Hibs clearly had no chance of stopping the momentum of this Rangers machine.

“Still the home side wait for a win over the Ibrox side at Easter Road, something that last happened in 2016.”

Not all of the blame can go to Hibs pair Obita and Moriah-Welsh, but they can definitely be criticised following their red cards in the capital.

The visitors were 1-0 ahead at the time of both sendings off, with Lundstram giving Philippe Clement’s side an early lead at Easter Road.

But the home side were undoubtedly still in the game, with their chances of levelling taking a huge hit with Obita’s red in the 68th minute, with Moriah-Welsh joining him in the changing room just three minutes later.

Rangers striker Silva then doubled his side’s lead shortly after, confirming the Ibrox club’s place in the last four of the Scottish Cup.

Fierce rivals Celtic secured their spot in the semi-finals with a 4-2 win at home to Livingston earlier on Sunday, with Greenock Morton taking on Hearts in the last quarter-final on Monday (11 March).

The semi-final draw will take place after that game, with Rangers surely hoping to avoid Brendan Rodgers’s side, with Aberdeen also still in the competition.
