Rangers: Connor Goldson flops with 3/10, John Lundstram stars – Player ratings v Hibernian

Rangers booked their place in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup with a 2-0 win over nine-man Hibernian at Easter Road.

John Souttar bundled in from close range to give the Gers the lead after pouncing on James Tavernier’s saved penalty in the 23rd minute.

Rangers had a couple of nervy moments, but Fabio Silva scored a second goal after Jordan Obita and Nathan Moriah-Welsh were issued red cards for the hosts.

Ibrox News rates each player out of 10 for their performance in Sunday’s (10 March) contest.

Jack Butland – 6

Was almost left red faced after failing to truly control a pass back to him, which Myziane Maolida pounced on and hit the post. Only had one save of note to make as Hibs struggled to get going. A clean sheet is a clean sheet, though.

James Tavernier – 5

Had a few bright moments, but biggest involvement in the match was ultimately his saved penalty. Took an age to run up and take the spot-kick, which seemed to work in David Marshall’s favour as he guessed the right way.

Connor Goldson – 3

Butland will no doubt have a word or two with Goldson regarding the pass played to him for that aforementioned Maolida chance. Also struggled in possession, giving the ball away a number of times. Did well defensively in his defence, but the weakest of the Gers’ back four.

John Souttar – 6

Strong defensively and more assured in possession. Hibernian did not muster too many attacking moves, but Souttar was alert when the opposition did get forward.

Ridvan Yilmaz – 7

Was doubled up on at times in what was likely a deliberate ploy, yet he coped well and also got forward as usual, while also contributing to the clean sheet.

Mohamed Diomande – 6

Had one great strike in particular that was narrowly over, but he was also guilty of one or two sloppy moments in the centre of the park, likely down to fatigue.

John Lundstram – 8

Showed great awareness to pounce on the loose ball after Tavernier’s penalty was saved. Also played in Silva for the Gers’ second goal in what was another very strong midfield display from Lundstram.

Dujon Sterling – 6

Won the penalty for Rangers after being clipped in the Hibs box. Was a lively presence up until he hobbled off before half-time in what could be a massive blow for Philippe Clement.

Tom Lawrence – 5

Found himself in some promising positions, but was wayward from a couple of attempts and did not have any major say on the contest.

Fabio Silva – 7

Like Lawrence, he also picked up the ball in some good positions and his perseverance paid off as he struck late on with a clinical finish – his second goal in the competition. Another notable feature of his game was the strength he showed at times to hold off opponents.

Cyriel Dessers – 5

Fashioned a couple of chances for himself but was unable to show the quality required in front of goal. Best of his chances saw his near post shot kept out. These are the type of games that make some question if he is a long-term option to lead the line.

Ross McCausland (on for Dujon Sterling 34′) – 4

Had some promising moments after replacing Sterling but final ball was lacking and he himself hobbled off, so not a great day all-around as the Gers’ injury problems mount.
