Rangers: Shay Given shares Scottish Premiership title race at Ibrox and Celtic

Shay Given has delivered an “exciting” verdict on the Scottish Premiership title race between Rangers and Celtic, with the Old Firm rivals separated by two points.

The Gers had slipped up in a 2-1 defeat to Motherwell on Saturday 2 March, but the Hoops were unable to take advantage, losing 2-0 to Hearts at Tynecastle Park.

Rangers have won just a single Scottish Premiership in the last decade, pipping Celtic to the title in the 2020/21 campaign, with the last league title dating back to 2011 for the Gers.

When asked by Alex Scott whether Rangers can win the league, Given replied via BBC Sport on Saturday (9 March): “I hope not. Rangers fans are shouting at the TV now. It’s exciting again from a neutral point of view – there’s a real title race because Celtic have been so strong over the last number of years.

“They have only played each other twice so far. It’s so close and it’ll go down to the wire. I hope Brendan [Rodgers] can swing that deficit around.”

Can Rangers beat Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title?

Philippe Clement will be busy with the potential to reach Europa League glory this season, with an upcoming second leg against Benfica.

However, the only team likely to stand in the way of Rangers and the league title is their Old Firm rivals, with two derbies still left to play.

Having already lifted the Scottish League Cup after a 1-0 win over Aberdeen in the final, the Gers could finish the season with three pieces of silverware at Ibrox, much to the displeasure of Celtic.

This is all down to the impeccable job that Clement has done at the club since his arrival in October, having taken over from the mess that Michael Beale left behind.

Fortunes have changed, and so has the momentum, swinging very much in Rangers’ favour, which could prove vital in the run-in to the end of the season.
