Rangers: ‘Incredible’ Dujon Sterling wows BBC Sport pundit in draw v Benfica

Rangers ace Dujon Sterling timed his run to “perfection” for his goal against Benfica, according to BBC Sport pundit Steven Thompson.

The Gers midfielder put his side 2-1 ahead in first-half added time of the Europa League round-of-16 first-leg clash on Thursday (7 March).

The game in Portugal finished in a 2-2 draw, with the second leg set to take place at Ibrox next Thursday (14 March).

“On first viewing I thought Sterling was offside, but he times his run to perfection,” Thompson said on BBC Sportsound (9.03pm, 7 March). “He pops up from nowhere to tap it home. What an incredible couple of minutes!”

Rangers and Benfica play out four-goal Europa League thriller

The Gers stormed into a 1-0 lead on the road, with Tom Lawrence finding the back of the net after just seven minutes.

Veteran attacker Angel Di Maria levelled for the hosts from the spot in the initial stages of first-half injury time, only for Sterling to put the visitors back in front moments later.

But a Connor Goldson own goal with just over 20 minutes remaining means the clubs head to Ibrox all square.

It is set to be a massive night under the lights in Glasgow, where the Ibrox faithful will be in full voice as they look to celebrate a memorable result against the Portuguese giants.

But Philippe Clement unfortunately has another big match to contend with before that, with his side taking on Hibernian in a Scottish Cup quarter-final on Sunday (10 March).

It will certainly be interesting to see how the manager approaches that one, with squad rotation undoubtedly needed in order to keep everyone fresh.
