Rangers: Four Lads rue ‘Huge’ Angel Di Maria decision in 2-2 draw v Benfica

Angel Di Maria should have been sent off towards the end of the game as Rangers claimed a hard-fought 2-2 draw in Lisbon against Benfica.

The Gers led twice thanks to goals from Tom Lawrence and Dujon Sterling, but Di Maria scored a penalty and a Connor Goldson own goal meant the honours were shared ahead of a second-leg clash at Ibrox next week.

But according to Four Lads Had A Dream, the Argentine winger should be suspended for that clash after an incident towards the end of the game should’ve seen him sent off only for the referee to decide against it.

“Di Maria should have been off at the end,” they wrote on their personal Twitter account (7 March).

“Will be missed as we focus on ourselves, but official has decided against it and that could be huge overall.”

Rangers did everyone proud vs Benfica

Considering all the injury issues in the squad right now, this Rangers squad did all the fans proud with that performance in Lisbon.

Benfica have never lost a home game in the Europa League and barring a baffling decision to award a penalty against John Souttar, the Gers could well have done the impossible.

But because there was such a good performance from the travelling underdogs, most people seem to not be mentioning the fact Di Maria could easily have been sent off and that would be a huge boost to Rangers for the second leg.

Had it been the other way around when Rangers were the favourites and a lesser opposition came to Ibrox, nobody would have heard the end of a decision going in their favour.

If the club can turn in another top performance on Thursday then the team could well find themselves in the quarter-finals, whether Di Maria is on the pitch or not.
