Rangers eye midfield goalscorer Matthias Seidl transfer ahead of rivals Celtic after rapid rise

Rangers are looking at a potential move for sought-after midfielder Matthias Seidl ahead of the summer transfer window, according to HITC.

The outlet reported on their website (7 March) that the Austrian international has been watched by the Light Blues this term alongside his teammate Leopold Querfeld, after his impressive form for the Austrian Bundesliga side.

The 23-year-old only moved to the Allianz Stadion in the summer following a stand-out campaign in winning the second tier title at FC Blau-Weiß Linz, but his form this term has bagged him three full international caps and has a group of British sides now showing interest.

The Light Blues are joined by Old Firm rivals Celtic, along with an English contingent of Leicester, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Burnley, with Seidl having scored nine and assisted six in all competitions so far this term.

The Gers have got some strong options when everyone is fit, with Todd Cantwell thriving in the central attacking midfield role above all, and Tom Lawrence also comfortable there.

But both have been hit by injury issues this term, as most players at Ibrox have been, to illustrate the need for high-quality back-up in all positions.

With so many teams in the race for Seidl it could be a tricky one to win if one or more put an offer on the table, particularly with the possibility of Premier League money getting involved.

Todd Cantwell has had a mixed season with Rangers.

New Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who was in the frame for the Rangers job before Philippe Clement took over, is Austrian and is thought to be very interested so may well be the favourite to land a deal.

Rangers have been linked to possible additions further back in midfield, while the question of a striker addition such as Lawrence Shankland will remain prominent, so it may be that interest in Seidl will have to remain just that.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have been tipped to potentially pull of an “almost impossible” transfer thanks to turmoil at a rival club.
