Rangers ace Connor Goldson makes unwanted Europa League history after what happened v Benfica

Rangers can certainly be proud of their efforts in Lisbon, where they played out a 2-2 draw with Benfica on Thursday (7 March).

The Estadio da Luz played host to the Europa League round of 16 first leg clash, with the visitors storming into a 1-0 lead thanks to Tom Lawrence.

The match twisted and turned with goals from Benfica’s Angel Di Maria and Rangers’ Dujon Sterling, with the latter’s teammate Connor Goldson having the final say on the scoreline with an unfortunate own goal.

Philippe Clement should be delighted with the display and the result, with a mouthwatering second leg clash now set for Ibrox next Thursday (14 March).

It was always going to be a big ask to leave Lisbon with a win, with the Portuguese giants boasting a long list of talented stars, both young and old.

But the Gers also have an exciting roster of players, again some with experience and others just starting out in their careers.

At the former end is defensive ace Goldson, who played the entire 90 minutes in Portugal, helping his side clinch an impressive draw.

But at the same time, the centre-back has now made very unwanted Europa League history, where he has now scored three own goals in the competition, the most of any player since its rebrand in 2009/10, as per BBC Sport.

It is not a statistic he will want to be reminded of, but fortunately there is simply no time to ponder it given the busy schedule.

Benfica make the trip to Ibrox next week, but Clement’s side must first meet Scottish Premiership rivals Hibernian in the Scottish Cup.
