Ally McCoist names his best ever Rangers XI and manager

Ally McCoist has named his greatest ever Rangers starting lineup and manager, and left himself out of the team.

Speaking to TNT Sports (7 March), the Scotland and Ibrox legend is the all-time top goalscorer for the club and only saw his record as top European scorer taken away two seasons ago by Alfredo Morelos.

But despite his incredible feats as a nine-time league winner and greatest goalscorer in the club’s history, McCoist left himself out of the side and apologised to other greats as he picked his team.

“I can’t believe I’ve not got Sandy Jardine in it,” he said. “There’s guys, there’s so many. If I’m playing with 4-4-2 I change it. Sandy’s my right-back all day. Gary Stevens will consider himself unlucky, he was brilliant for us. Trevor Steven was brilliant for us.

“But I’m going three at the back. I’m going Andy Goram in goal, who I would suggest would have a quiet 90 minutes.

“I’d then go Richard Gough, Terry Butcher and John Greig. Five across the middle: Laudrup, Gascoigne, Souness, Baxter, Cooper.

“Durrant in front and big Derek Johnstone up top. Apologies to those who haven’t made it, but I’ll probably change my mind tomorrow and you’ll get back in.

“Captain could be any of the three at the back, or Souness for that matter. I’ve got a decision to pick out of the four of them. John Greig is my captain.

“Walter [Smith] is manager and I’m his assistant. I don’t mind that at all. That would be the dream.”

What is the greatest Rangers team ever?

There’s no doubt that McCoist was just being humble by leaving himself out of the team, but there’s little debate about the rest of the team in all honesty.

You could maybe make an argument for getting Allan McGregor in the side over Goram but it’s hard have a Bears team that doesn’t include the legendary stopper.

Some younger fans may potentially feel that James Tavernier could potentially have a place in the side at right-back also, while others believe he isn’t good enough. But in this back three system there was never any doubt he would miss out.

This is a club with such incredible history and this current crop of players have a chance this season to put themselves higher up the list by winning a league title this year.

There is nobody who is really close to reaching that super legendary status any time soon, but a run of dominance could do it and with the way that Philippe Clement has got the team playing the sky is the limit.
