Rangers: Ally McCoist gushes over Tom Lawrence live on TNT Sports after what he did v Benfica
Ally McCoist was stunned by Tom Lawrence after the Rangers midfielder gave his side the lead in the 2-2 draw against Benfica on March 7.
The Rangers legend was delighted by the fast start to the Europa League tie with Lawrence scoring the opener with his head after a clipped ball in from Mohamed Diomande.
It was the perfect start for Philippe Clement’s side despite some early pressure and gave them the foundation to take some confidence from the game.
Speaking live on TNT Sports [7 March, 21:02], McCoist gushed: “Rangers had an absolutely brilliant start. A fantastic start. What a goal. It was a beautiful move down the left-hand side, Diomande continued his run, Silva gave it back, and the header from Tom Lawrence was brilliant.”

Lawrence’s early goal set the tone for the game, or the first half at least as Gers looked to break against the opponents despite plenty of pressure piled on, taking their chances when they fell to their attackers who were clinical.
It was ultimately two defensive mistakes which cost Rangers yet again, with a penalty given away by John Souttar amid plenty of criticism of his performances, before Connor Goldson scored an own goal which levelled the score.
Souttar’s penalty was a controversial call as he headed the ball onto his arm, but in an overall impressive defensive display from Rangers, it was the attacking players that stole the show with their first-half performances.
Lawrence’s goal was the perfect start for the Ibrox club, with McCoist rightfully pleased with what should be looked at as a huge performance and result from Clement’s men away from home in Europe.
All eyes are now on Ibrox next week.
