Rangers may have Old Firm advantage after Brendan Rodgers news on Wednesday

There has been no shortage of controversy involving VAR in Scottish football this season and Rangers have obviously had their fair share of contention.

Indeed, it was the last Old Firm derby that the Gers up in arms following a controversy involving Alistair Johnston and Abdallah Sima and VAR on that day Willie Collum.

The furore rumbled on for weeks but Rangers are certainly not the only club to have their grievances and Celtic were not too pleased following their defeat to Hearts on Sunday (3 March).

Rodgers was left fuming with VAR John Beaton and referee Don Robertson, particularly over a red card dished out to Yang Hyun-Jun – an appeal was launched but ultimately failed.

Celtic also felt that Hearts were given a cheap penalty when Tomoki Iwata are pinged for handball.

Bhoys boss Rodgers let his feelings be known after the game and his criticism has led to an SFA charge and faces a hearing on Thursday 28 March.

Will Brendan Rodgers be banned for Rangers v Celtic at Ibrox?

According to Football Scotland (6 March), Rodgers could face a two-game touchline ban that would see him in the stands for Celtic’s trip to Livingston (31 March) and the crucial Old Firm clash with Rangers on 7 April at Ibrox.

Ibrox, the home of Rangers.
Ibrox, the home of Rangers.

If that were to happen then it could represent a pretty big advantage for Rangers. There are no guarantees obviously, but not having Rodgers in the dugout could pose a psychological boost for Rangers.

In what is sure to be a continuing hotly fought battle for the Scottish Premiership title, these are the kind of details that might settle the destination of the trophy.
