Jeff Stelling slaughters Rangers and Celtic live on air after losses v Motherwell and Hearts

Jeff Stelling has slaughtered Rangers and Celtic live on talkSPORT after their defeats this past weekend to Motherwell and Hearts.

The Old Firm duo were both beaten on the same weekend for the first time since 2018, leaving the Bears still two points clear at the top of the SPFL table.

But while on talkSPORT’s breakfast show (4 March), Stelling admitted that while the title race being close is a good thing he believes it shows the lack of quality the sides have now in comparison to recent years that they’ve lost eight times between them this season.

“As an Englishman I am going to rain on both of your parades,” he said.

“The fact that it is so close, that’s great – but between them, Celtic and Rangers have lost eight games in the league this season.

“Does this just tell you that the quality of these Rangers and Celtic sides is not up to what it has been in the past?”

Rangers can’t win no matter what they do

When Rangers lose games against weaker opposition they get slaughtered for not being good enough, or being as good as they were in previous years.

But if the team win games at a canter, as they have done for much of the time Philippe Clement has been in charge at Ibrox, it’s because other teams are poor and the league is incredibly weak.

So which one is it? Is the Rangers team not as good as the teams of the past, or is the league actually just getting stronger and the media aren’t giving them their credit for winning?

Rangers manager Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement has overseen an excellent turnaround at Rangers.

The truth is that it’s probably a mixture of both, and five league defeats in a season is not ideal for the club. But most of those came under Michael Beale and the turnaround since he left has been nothing short of sensational.

Stelling is right in that it’s not been the best season for either Rangers or Celtic, but it’s a weird thing to complain about when usually the complaint is that the league isn’t competitive enough.
