Rangers: Chris Sutton shares ‘funny’ title race admission after Celtic defeat v Hearts

Rangers and Celtic have found themselves in a “funny old title race” after Brendan Rodgers’ side suffered a third defeat of the season against Hearts, according to Chris Sutton.

Philippe Clement’s Light Blues missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premiership as they lost 2-1 to Motherwell on Saturday (2 March) before Celtic blew their chance to climb above the Gers at Tynecastle on Sunday (3 March).

The weekend’s results mean that Rangers still sit on the top of the table after 29 matches, but only by a point after one of the most unusual Premiership weekends in recent history.

Writing on X on Sunday (3 March) Sutton said: “Funny old title race over the weekend. Well done to Hearts. Yang red card I really don’t like but understand why it was given.

“Iwata handball is so harsh but would have been awarded because of the position of his arm but he was nudged but can’t say it’s a surprise in Scotland…”

Will Rangers or Celtic win the Scottish Premiership this season?

Few would have expected both Rangers and Celtic to stay still this weekend, but the title race has also had its own mid-season break over the last few days as neither Glasgow side has taken advantage of the other’s shortcomings.

Rangers were nowhere near good enough against Motherwell on Saturday, but their slopiness has managed to go completely unpunished as the Hoops were just as off the pace at Tynecastle on Sunday.

Clement and his side have to view this weekend’s slip-up as a stroke of luck and quickly get back to winning ways sooner rather than later. Their Europa League clash with Benfica won’t be easy, but anything less than a win will dampen the mood at Ibrox.

Hopefully, they can take advantage of Celtic’s latest slip-up and maintain their place at the top of the table from now until the end of the season, but there will almost certainly be more twists and turns to come in this title race.
