Rangers: BBC Sportscene wowed by what James Tavernier did despite Ibrox loss v Motherwell

Pundit James McFadden has labelled James Tavernier’s penalty for Rangers against Motherwell as “tremendous”.

The Gers’ skipper was on the scoresheet for the 14th time this season in the Scottish Premiership and he dispatched his spot-kick from 12 yards.

However, it wasn’t enough for Philippe Clement’s side to pick up a result and they were beaten 2-1 on their own patch.

McFadden said on BBC Sportscene (2 March): “I think if Liam Kelly is standing there (on that side), he’s still not saving it. It’s a tremendous penalty. One of the angles you see, Stephen O’Donnell follows through and catches Fabio Silva.”

Tavernier’s ability from set-pieces for Rangers is no secret and it has been a key weapon for them since he joined them back in 2015 from penalties, free-kicks and corners.

The full-back, who is 32 years old, linked up with the Glasgow side when they were in the Scottish Championship and has since been a great servant to the club, having previously been at Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic.

He has made 445 appearances in all competitions and has chipped in with 121 goals.

Tavernier and his Rangers teammates will be disappointed that they were beaten by Motherwell this weekend. It gives their rivals Celtic the chance to overtake them if they can win their upcoming clash against Hearts away.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement has overseen an excellent turnaround at Rangers.

Nevertheless, Clement’s side are still well in the title race and their most recent loss was their first of 2024 which shows how tough they have been to break down over recent times.
