Chris Sutton shares Rangers admission as ‘unthinkable’ Kyogo Furuhashi situation mooted at Celtic

Chris Sutton believes Celtic will need to be at their absolute best if they are to beat Rangers, who show no signs of letting up, to the Scottish Premiership title.

Philippe Clement has created an incredible atmosphere at Ibrox, with his players closing the gap on their Old Firm rivals over the last few weeks and, eventually, taking the top spot.

The Gers currently hold a two-point gap over Brendan Rodgers’ side, and with no signs of slowing down, the league title could come down to the wire.

Writing for Daily Record on Saturday (2 March), Sutton said: “You could argue their result was even more impressive than Celtic hitting Dundee for seven. The way Derek McInnes has Kilmarnock playing, plenty of fans would have been looking at Rugby Park as a potential bump in the road.

“To come back from a goal down and get the three points was good going – and it shows Celtic are not going to get any favours.

“They might need to win all games outside the Rangers clashes – and take four points against the Ibrox side. That’s a tall order and have we seen enough evidence to suggest it’s going to happen?”

Perplexed by the situation surrounding Kyogo Furuhashi at Celtic Park, Sutton still thinks the Japan international could cause damage to Rangers: “I still can’t get my head around what’s happened to him this season but if he’s going to be on the bench in the next few weeks it will be extremely interesting when it comes to Ibrox next month.

“Kyogo has shown he’s a player for the big games and he’s caused Rangers so much damage over the years, including this season. It would be almost unthinkable to leave him out of the side going to Govan, yet Idah’s form might give Rodgers no choice.”

Will Rangers pip Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title?

Despite their current form, Rangers fans will still be wary about getting too ahead of themselves with two Old Firm derbies still yet to play.

Even though Furuhashi has been utilised as a substitute in recent weeks, displaced by loanee Adam Idah, the Japanese forward still has the potential to deal a lot of damage to Clement’s side.

The 29-year-old has netted seven times in the last seven meetings between the Old Firm rivals, and even with just nine league goals this season, he could strike at any time.

However, Rangers seem far more stabilised under Clement, who has implemented a new mindset at Ibrox since arriving in October, losing just once in 28 matches in all competitions.

Currently on a 10-game unbeaten run, Rangers will be keen to continue that form until the end of the season and lift just their second Scottish Premiership trophy in the last decade.
