Rangers: Chris Sutton makes ‘brilliant’ Ibrox title admission in ‘inconsistent’ Celtic verdict

Rangers are favourites to win the Scottish Premiership title this season, but the remaining Old Firm derbies against Celtic this season will be decisive, according to Chris Sutton.

Philippe Clement’s Light Blues currently sit two points clear of Brendan Rodgers’ side at the top of the table, but face a tough clash against Kilmarnock on Wednesday (28 February) while Celtic face Dundee at Parkhead.

While Sutton has been blown away by Rangers’ performances since Clement arrived at Ibrox, he still thinks this “brilliant” title race will come down to the final game of the season despite the Hoops’ inconsistency.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Wednesday (28 February) he said: “Second is last in Glasgow, we all know that. Rangers have been so, so good since Philippe Clement has come in and they have this unwavering belief in the way that they play.

“At this moment in time, Rangers are favourites but of course, we’ve got two derby games to come which may have a big say on who eventually wins the title. They’re playing in fits and starts as they have done all season. They’ve been inconsistent.

“Celtic got over the line at the weekend late on against Motherwell. They needed to win to stay within touching distance of Rangers. But this is going to go to the wire. It’s going to be brilliant and there’s going to be loads of twists and turns.”

Will Rangers beat Celtic to the Premiership title this season?

Rangers are in the driving seat in Glasgow at the moment and that has been the case ever since Clement arrived in Scotland, but there is still plenty of football to be played and a lot to be won in the final months of the campaign.

The Light Blues have to improve their Old Firm record if they have genuine aspirations of lifting the tile this season as the remaining two derbies of the season could prove to be decisive.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement has overseen an excellent turnaround at Rangers.

So far this season, the Gers have shown that they can beat big teams in Europe, with impressive wins over Real Betis and Sparta Prague. Now they have to replicate those exploits and beat Celtic domestically.

The title is never won in February and while Rangers have an excellent chance of making history this season, in a number of competitions, they have to put their foot on the gas and kick-on rather than let their standards slip.
