Rangers sent instant Chris Sutton message live after Adam Idah strike for Celtic v Motherwell

Chris Sutton reacted to a late victory for Celtic at Motherwell to warn Rangers that the SPFL title race isn’t over.

After the Gers went five points clear at the top of the table with a 5-0 hammering of Hearts the Hoops were straining to keep pace as they entered stoppage time level at 1-1 at Fir Park on 25 February, before Adam Idah scored his second in the 94th minute to take the points at the death.

Luis Palma added a 96th-minute third to complete the comeback victory and bring Celtic back within two of Philippe Clement’s men, and Sutton’s instant message live on the Sky Sports commentary was one directed at Ibrox.

He said (1.54pm): “Relief for Brendan Rodgers. Relief for Celtic. No titles won just yet.”

Brendan Rodgers stays within touching distance of Rangers after late drama at Fir Park

Sutton is quite right that the Scottish Premiership remains in the balance, and Clement has already shown that he isn’t taken anything for granted.

More dropped points looked possible after Motherwell took the lead and remained level past 90 minutes, but it would have been unexpected all the same.

The Light Blues have forced themselves to the top of the table but there is plenty of work still to do before they can get within touching distance of another trophy this season.

They have been named favourites by various pundits already, and the destruction of an in-form Hearts side showed why at Ibrox on Saturday.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement shouldn’t be blamed for his players’ poor pre-season performances

Rodgers would have been under major pressure if he hadn’t been able to respond and he came dangerously close to that outcome, so the late drama is a key boost for him.

But the nine-point swing since Clement came in is evidence that the momentum is currently with Rangers.
