Rangers priority named amid ‘unbelievable’ Philippe Clement verdict

Rangers must prioritise the Scottish Premiership this season according to former Ibrox striker Kenny Miller.

The verdict comes after Philippe Clement’s side moved five points clear of Glasgow rivals Celtic at the top of the table.

The Gers thrashed Hearts 5-0 at Ibrox on Saturday (24 February), with the Bhoys travelling to Motherwell on Sunday (25 February).

“Rangers’ number one priority this season is the league,” Miller wrote for the Daily Record. “It HAS to be. And you know what? For me, number two is the Scottish Cup. Because if they win both, it will mean a domestic Treble and an unbelievable achievement for the manager in his first season. Europe comes third in my opinion.

“To actually wrestle it back off Celtic, who brought a big hitter in Brendan Rodgers back and were seven points clear at one stage – it would be incredible.

“Do Rangers want to beat Benfica? For sure. Do they want to win the Europa League? Of course they do. But you can also prioritise. And the title has to be the main aim. Deep down, Clement will know that. So far, he’s taken 52 points out of 57 in the Premiership, which is remarkable. And if he keeps that up, they’ll win it.”

Will Rangers focus on the Scottish Premiership?

It has been a simply stunning turnaround for the Gers under Clement, with the Belgian completely transforming the club after their struggles under Michael Beale earlier this season.

Celtic may have done their rivals a few favours with many poor displays under Rodgers, but the Ibrox club deserve huge credit for their form in recent months.

They now have a five-point lead over the Bhoys, although the latter can close that gap when they travel to Fir Park.

Rangers also have the Europa League and Scottish Cup to focus on this season, having already lifted the League Cup under Clement.

It will certainly be interesting to see where the manager’s priorities lie, but he may just feel that he is a strong and big enough squad to successfully challenge in all three competitions.
