Rangers: BBC Sportscene pundit blasts Beni Baningime after what Hearts star did at Ibrox

By Jessica Elliott

Not wanting to concede early at Ibrox was Hearts’ downfall in their 5-0 defeat to Rangers, according to Richard Foster.

Mohamed Diomande opened the scoring in the second minute before his side went on to thrash the Edinburgh club.

Foster feels that the away side could’ve done better, putting the blame on Beni Baningime.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene (24 February), the pundit said: “I think if Baningime is on the edge of the box, he can go and engage the ball but he drops himself too deep, he can’t get there, and he shows him [Diomande] onto his left foot which is a mistake.

“Hearts have enough bodies to stop the goal but they all sink towards the net. You’re at Ibrox, you don’t want to concede early, but I think they need to be a bit more progressive.

“It’s a great finish but don’t allow him the space. Baningime is doing nothing while he’s in the box.”

Hearts couldn’t contain ruthless Rangers

Although Hearts weren’t at their best, no one could’ve contained the Rangers team that ran out victors on Saturday.

The pieces are falling into place and Rangers are two points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership, with Celtic having played against Motherwell on Sunday (25 February).

Ibrox is a difficult place to come to and the fans were up on their feet from the first second, being given reason to celebrate soon enough.

The supporters had been asking questions over the arrival of Diomande in January but he has quickly proven why Philippe Clement was so eager to bring the Ivorian to Glasgow. With two goals in two starts, the £4.3m transfer looks like he’ll turn out to be a bargain.

Although Celtic were eight points clear at one point, the severe dip in form that the Bhoys are experiencing could see Clement’s side extend their lead even more. With a Europa League tie against Benfica on the horizon though, the Gers will have to ensure that domestic performance levels don’t drop.
