Rangers: BBC pundit reacts to controversial Cyriel Dessers moment v Hearts, ‘screaming for it’
Rangers’ fourth goal against Hearts was correctly awarded, although the away side had every right to appeal against the decision, according to Richard Foster.
Dessers scored twice as Rangers thrashed Hearts 5-0 at Ibrox on Saturday (24 February) to move five points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
Philippe Clement’s men sent a strong statement to Celtic by making such light work of the team placed third in the division, although the home side were perhaps slightly fortunate when their fourth goal was allowed to stand as the ball appeared to strike Dessers’ hand in the buildup.
However, Foster had very few complaints over the decision to award the goal, stating on BBC Sportscene (24 February): “I think it is accidental and because he doesn’t score straight away, there are a couple of touches, I think that is why it’s allowed.
“If I am Hearts, I’m screaming for it, and I am wanting it to be a handball but I think his (Dessers) movement and composure when he gets in that area deserved the goal.”
Should Cyriel Dessers’ goal in Rangers v Hearts have been ruled out?
Whether or not the goal had been ruled out, it is fair to suggest that it would have had very little impact on the scoreline or result.
Rangers were rampant, and if Dessers had been denied his brace at that moment, he likely would have gone on to score again either way.
Hearts might feel aggrieved, and perhaps have some room to complain, but they certainly cannot put the loss down to that particular moment.
Clement’s side fully deserved the three points, and it was the kind of result that will have supporters in Ibrox now believing that they can beat Celtic to the title.
Hearts have been impressive this season and had won four in a row heading into the clash with the Gers, but the home side made things look so easy.

Dessers has four goals in his last three league matches, and if he continues in this form he could fire Rangers to the title.
