Rangers: Celtic reveals shows size of job Nils Koppen has at Ibrox
Celtic have made a total of £33million profit from transfers in the last ten seasons, while Rangers are £10million down, showing the size of the job Nils Koppen has on his hands at Ibrox.
As reported by the Daily Record [22 February], the likes of Odsonne Edouard, Jota and Kieran Tierney have bagged Celtic high fees in recent years, while Rangers’ sales have been more modest.
The sales of Nathan Patterson, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey saw the Ibrox club rake in a profit, but beyond those sales, there is very little to mention.
What will Nils Koppen do at Rangers?
Koppen arrived in Glasgow at the start of the January transfer window, with an immediate plan in place to change the way Rangers worked in the transfer market – and the business at Ibrox proved his work had already started.
The likes of Oscar Cortes and Mohamed Diomande, aged 20 and 22 respectively, arrived on initial loan deals with options to buy in the summer, and the long-term plan will be for them to later be sold to bring in a profit.
That, in turn, would allow the club to further invest in young talent, develop them and sell them on, in what should become a fruitful cycle with those youngsters supported by more senior stalwarts.
Diomande’s arrival has been hailed in particular despite a steep transfer fee reported to be around £4.5million, and he has begun to make his name known already after scoring a rocket against St Johnstone.

A £43million gap between the two Old Firm clubs is evidence that this change was desperately needed, both to allow the club to push forward and also to help close a widening financial gap.
Player sales are key when it comes to spending money within their means. Both clubs have to spend to compete both domestically and in Europe, but without much income, they are limited in what they can do in the transfer market.
If Koppen can revolutionise the way Rangers go about their business, in three or four years they should be at least matching the transfer profits of their rivals – if not surpassing them.
In other Rangers news, three players could be shown the exit door this summer.
