Rangers transfer news: Premier League and MLS clubs want Alexander Smith

Rangers prospect Alexander Smith is gaining interest from Premier League academies, as well as clubs in the MLS, according to Tom Bogert.

The Athletic journalist reported [22 February] that clubs around the world are keeping tabs on the 15-year-old midfielder, who is very highly rated at Auchenhowie.

It is understood, as per The Sun, that Arsenal may be the ones closing in on the signing of Smith from Rangers, having tracked him for “some time” and are readying a six-figure compensation fee.

Arsenal facing tough battle for young Rangers talent

Smith looks to be an incredible talent, one that the Gers may find difficult to keep hold of with so many clubs coming knocking for his signature.

The 15-year-old starred at the East Mallorca Cup in Spain last April, picking up four Man of the Match awards in five games for Rangers. There is no telling how high this young player’s ceiling is.

Although the Ibrox side will be offered a significant compensation fee for the wonderkid, Rangers fans will be disappointed to see the young star exit the club with so much potential.

Philippe Clement has proven that there is a clear path from the club’s academy to the first team, with Ross McCausland the perfect example of this.

After being given his first real opportunity this season by caretaker manager Steven Davis, McCausland has only improved, coming on leaps and bounds since cementing his spot in the senior squad.

He now has 11 Scottish Premiership starts to his name, and eight further substitute appearances, proving that age is just a number when it comes to Clement’s squad.

Of course, the decision is up to the player, and it is understandable if he chooses to leave with so many shining lights being dangled in front of him, but he could develop just as well if he stayed in Scotland.

In other Rangers news, a “shock” development on goalkeeper Jack Butland is now on the cards at Ibrox.
