Rangers close to agreement for new John Lundstram contract – Chris Jack

Rangers are close to an agreement with John Lundstram to extend his contract at Ibrox beyond this season, according to Chris Jack.

Writing on the Rangers Review website (22 February), the journalist reports that the club are committed to agreeing a new deal with the central midfielder after his performances this season.

Philippe Clement wants the former Sheffield United man to stay at the club beyond this summer when his current deal expires, and a new multi-year deal is expected to be agreed within weeks.

“The Rangers Review understands the club are committed to securing Lundstram’s services for next season and beyond and an agreement is likely in the coming weeks,” he wrote.

Does John Lundstram deserve a new Rangers contract?

Lundstram has been a brilliant member of the squad at Ibrox this season, and since Clement came into the club there has been a real resurgence in his form.

The midfielder turned 30 this month and there were suggestions last season and at the start of this season that people believed he could be beginning a downward trajectory as his form struggled.

But now he has become incredibly important to the team, with his physical style and energy a key part of the way the manager has set up his new team.

However, a multi-year deal is definitely a risk. We have seen in the past that the club have made bad decisions with contracts and there is nothing to suggest that he could be performing at this level for years to come.

But it can be looked at the other way around and be seen as a way to protect themselves by ensuring they can secure a fee if he does start to drop off, rather than allowing him to leave for free.

Either way, Lundstram deserves a new deal based on this season and if Clement wants him to stay then he has earned the trust of the fans and board to get it.
