Rangers: John Souttar ‘doubts’ raised at Ibrox in Scotland Euro 2024 squad debate
Scott McDermott has tipped John Souttar to earn a place in the Scotland squad for Euro 2024 thanks to his form for Rangers this season.
Souttar has played 18 times in the Scottish Premiership this campaign for leaders Rangers and featured 26 times in all competitions.
The 27-year-old earned his seventh cap for Scotland as a substitute against France in October, but starts have been a lot harder to come by.
Asked if he should be part of Steve Clarke’s squad for the Euros, Sunday Mail journalist McDermott said on the Scottish Football Podcast [21 February, 15m 46s]: “I’d take him if he continues on this run of form.
“I think there’s only ever been two real doubts over Souttar as a player. One of those has been his injury record, which has been patchy, and also how he’d get on in a back four.
“At Hearts he excelled on the right of a back three. This season he’s proved he can handle that. His form has been excellent and he’s never let Scotland down and Steve Clarke really likes him.
“If Clarke was picking his squad tomorrow for the Euros then I’d imagine Souttar would be in it.”
John Souttar earning strong praise for Rangers displays
Souttar has helped Rangers to five clean sheets in his past seven outings, while also chipping in with a goal of his own during that run.
That has helped Rangers to usurp Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table as we approach the business end of the campaign.
Even Chris Sutton admitted he has been impressed by the improvements he has seen from Souttar this season.
The 27-year-old is still young enough to continue getting better, which can only be good news from Rangers’ perspective.
Souttar was part of Scotland’s most recent squad and, while he has competition in front of him, it makes sense for the Gers defender to travel to Germany.

Whether it is playing in a back three or a back four, the former Hearts player is capable of doing so.
And having featured regularly for the Light Blues throughout the campaign, he has showed he can be relied upon fitness wise.
The competition for a centre-back berth at Rangers has been intense, but it has only helped to get the best out of Souttar this term.
