Rangers ‘not a good team’ claims Frank McAvennie as Celtic blasted over SPFL title switch

Rangers aren’t a good team and are getting wins while “feeding off scraps” despite going top of the league, according to Frank McAvennie.

The former Celtic striker told PLZ Soccer on 19 February that even Pep Guardiola couldn’t improve the situation at Parkhead currently, after Brendan Rodgers’ side drew with Kilmarnock at the weekend to let the Gers go clear, with the players who have come into the team not good enough.

He demanded that the underperforming Hoops “grow a set” and “stand up and be counted” as he admitted Rangers will now be title favourites, but dismissed the quality of Philippe Clement’s side.

McAvennie said (4m 20s): “They’ll be favourites because of the bookies and all that, but let’s be honest, I’m going to look at it and say Rangers aren’t in any great shape, they’re not a good team.

“But they’re winning games. Clement’s come in and what he’s done is he’s made it simple. You don’t see them passing it across the back because they’ve not got those kind of players.

“They’re getting it up the park and they’re starting to play, and they’re feeding off scraps. And they’re getting wins, they are getting results. It’s something that Celtic don’t do now.”

Frank McAvennie not impressed by Rangers as Celtic slammed

Without a suitable manager this Rangers side have already proven they can very much be not a good team.

But given the contrasting fortunes of the club with Clement in charge and what Michael Beale has done since it is also starting to look like they can be a formidable one with the right man in charge.

The Old Firm derby defeat on 30 December remains a definite negative, but the Belgian is doing about as much as he could be expected to with a squad that just a few months back looked a mess.

One trophy secured, a nine point swing in the title race, and qualification as Europa League group winners, suggests there is more to the current operation at Ibrox than McAvennie is willing to concede.

Frank McAvennie isn’t impressed by Rangers despite Celtic implosion.

That Celtic are suddenly looking so brittle is exactly why the missed opportunity to put pressure on Rodgers straight away at the beginning of the campaign was such a frustration, and why Beale didn’t last long after his summer rebuild.

There remains a long way to go so Rangers can’t assume the battle has been won already, but based on his work so far Clement doesn’t appear willing to allow that sort of complacency so confidence is understandable climbing.
