Rangers set for SPFL title as internal dispute renders Celtic ‘unsalvageable’ – David Tanner
It is now Rangers’ title to lose thanks to “in-fighting” at Celtic rendering their challenge “unsalvageable”, according to David Tanner.
The talkSPORT broadcaster reacted via Twitter on 18 February after the Light Blues beat St Johnstone 3-0 to go two clear at the top of the SPFL, with the Hoops having dropped more points at home to Kilmarnock a day earlier.
He predicted that only Philippe Clement’s side getting in their own way could stop the march to the title because their Old Firm rivals don’t now have the strength to turn the tables as they turn on themselves.
Tanner wrote: “The only thing that can stop Rangers winning the SPFL Premiership title is Rangers. Celtic’s season of in-fighting seems unsalvageable.”
Rangers to win SPFL as Brendan Rodgers return falls apart?
It would probably be premature to start assuming Clement has got the league within his grasp already given it is the Belgian himself who has shown how quickly fortunes can turn.
Rangers were seven points off the pace when he took charge but have since lost only once in all competitions since, albeit in the one meeting between the two sides, while lifting the Viaplay Cup trophy.
That the man he replaced, Michael Beale, has already been sacked again after surprisingly getting the Sunderland job, suggests the quality of the current Ibrox management gives the club a far stronger chance of further silverware.
Celtic appeared to be on their way to retaining the title by default at the start of the season, as the opportunity to take advantage of a potentially uncomfortable reunion for Rodgers at Parkhead was resoundingly missed.
But the relentless pressure that Clement has kept up since with the Gers’ form has belatedly done just that.
Despite the Light Blues squad still having some clear gaps they are looking formidable each week, so if the manager can tick off the biggest job still on his list of priorities and get the better of Celtic in the derby then 56 could well be on the cards.
In other Rangers news, bureaucratic issues have hit a Light Blues player and his manager now has no idea when he will be allowed to play.
