Rangers: Sky Sports pundit raises ‘problem’ that could swing title race with Celtic
Mark Wilson insists Celtic still have a stronger squad than Rangers, but their inability to field their best XI is a “problem” that could prove decisive.
The Gers leapfrogged their fierce rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership summit at the weekend, climbing top for the first time in 18 months.
Philippe Clement’s men saw off St Johnstone 3-0 at McDiarmid Park on Sunday (18 February), a day on from Celtic’s 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock.
Asked if Celtic are capable of recovering, Wilson told Sky Sports News [19 February, 11:15]: “I think when the strongest team is out, Celtic still have the strongest starting XI.
“But that’s been the problem for Celtic – getting the strongest XI on the field. But if they can do that, I still believe Celtic are strong enough.”
Phillipe Clement has found a way for Rangers
Having a stronger XI is all well and good for Celtic, even though that is not the case, but title battles are all about how strong your squad is.
Rangers have had to cope without a number of players across the during of his tenure, not least Abdallah Sima after he had just hit form.
Rather than sulk, Clement has worked to find solutions. Whether it is playing some in different positions or using fringe players, he has found a way.

The reality is that Celtic have won both league fixtures this season, but Rangers have showed more consistency over the course of the other 24 games.
Even if Celtic were to have their strongest XI between now and the end of the season for every game, Rangers will still be confident of coming out on top.
Ultimately, the team sitting in first place come the end of the final day of the season can boast to being the better. The table, after all, does not lie.
