Rangers: Chris Sutton hits back as ‘private’ Ibrox conversation aired live on Sky Sports by pundit

Chris Sutton shut down a “private” comment made by James McFadden regarding the goal scored by Rangers midfielder Mohamed Diomande.

Diomande fired Rangers ahead with a brilliant strike in Sunday’s (18 February) Scottish Premiership clash with St Johnstone.

The January recruit took a touch and unleashed from about 22 yards after a flicked pass from Todd Cantwell, leaving Dimitar Mitov with little chance.

Analysing the goal on Sky Sports Football [18 February, 12:52pm], McFadden said: “It’s good play because it’s quick up to Cantwell, around the corner.

“If you look at the positioning of the midfielders, it’s great from Diomande. He gets a good strike at goal and the ball is always going away from the goalkeeper, but Chris thinks he should save it.”

A laughing Sutton interjected with: “That was a private conversation. It was a great strike.”

Mohamed Diomande up and running for Rangers

Diomande marked his Scottish Premiership debut in style with this superb strike in front of the Rangers fans.

Much is expected of the midfielder, even if he was unknown to most prior to last month, and this is some way to welcome yourself to the club.

The Ivorian rolled his boot over the ball and did not hesitate in thumping a shot away from Mitov to open the scoring in a scrappy first half.

It was the one moment of quality and gave the visitors a platform to build from at McDiarmid Park.

Philippe Clement’s new-look Rangers squad is already beginning to take shape this summer.

Diomande is a bit of an all-around midfielder who is capable of chipping in with goals from deep, as we saw here.

As for whether Mitov should have saved it, the precision and power were simply too much for the St Johnstone stopper.

Diomande’s only problem now is living with the hype that will be placed on his shoulders after this positive start.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement has set the Gers a £30million transfer target following news that emerged this week.
