Philippe Clement reacts instantly on Sky Sports as Rangers go top of league
Philippe Clement said Rangers can only focus on the next game after they went top of the Scottish Premiership on Sunday (18 February).
Celtic’s 1-1 draw at home to Kilmarnock a day prior left the door open for the Light Blues, who took their opportunity with a 3-0 triumph at St Johnstone – Mohamed Diomande’s effort and two penalties from James Tavernier getting the job done.
But Rangers boss Clement says there will be no celebrations from and that his focus is now immediately on what comes next, with Hearts visiting Ibrox on February 24.
“It’s nothing to do with the ranking I think we can only talk about the results and they have been really good until now, we have a long series of wins now,” he told Sky Sports Football (14:19).
“But I look always to the next game. That’s my mentality, that’s my character and I know it’s the only way to win trophies and for sure when there are other good teams in the league also.
“So, I’m really happy about the three points because it was a difficult game to play in those circumstances and that we had to play a different kind of football.
“That’s the important thing the team is ready to play different kinds of football, to win it and to win it also comfortably in a good way that we were never in doubt not one second during the game that’s a big step forward from a few months ago.”
Rangers beat St Johnstone to go top of Scottish Premiership ahead of Celtic
How refreshing is it to see a Rangers manager talk like this?
Look, it’s a hell of an achievement for Rangers to be top of the table from where they were when Clement took charge in October, eight points back of Celtic and looking completely done in the title race.
But now not only have they clawed it back they have overtaken their fierce rivals and are now the ones to be caught in the table, a quite remarkable turnaround in just a few short months.
Clement, though, knows the battle is not over, not by a long shot. There is still a heck of a lot of football left to be played and if Rangers want to be title winners once again they need to focus and get ready for Hearts next week.
You get the sense that Clement will not allow it to be any other way, he is focused only on trophies.
