Chris Sutton fumes at Sky Sports player footage in Rangers win v St Johnstone

Chris Sutton has hit out at St Johnstone defender Andrew Considine after he conceded a penalty which handed Rangers the first of their two penalties in the 3-0 win.

As the ball came into the box, it was a 50-50 between Considine and Dujon Sterling, but the Gers man got there first ahead of the sliding defender who clattered into him and gave away a penalty.

It was the first of two penalties awarded in the game, both of which were converted by James Tavernier as Rangers made the most of their opportunity to go top of the league.

Speaking live on Sky Sports [14:12], Sutton ranted: “The first one, I mean, what’s Considine thinking about making that challenge? You know, Sterling wasn’t going to go in and score, or probably not. That was a really poor decision from him.”

Chris Sutton rages as Rangers take top spot from Celtic

While Sutton may well have been right in what he said, it was a silly and unnecessary challenge that put the game beyond hope for St Johnstone, the former Celtic man could not hide his frustration as Rangers took top spot in the SPFL with their victory.

Two penalties from Tavernier certainly assisted that win, but having led 1-0 before either decision was given, Philippe Clement’s side never looked like they would concede in what was ultimately a comfortable game.

A closely fought title race was always set to come down to one side slipping and the other making the most of it. While the conclusion is still far from being upon us, this first slip from Celtic may have given their rivals the edge not just on points but mentally too.

If Gers can continue doing what they have been doing for the last months with their consistent results and run of victories, they can make the title their own, with their fate now in their own hands.
