Rangers: SPFL meeting to now take place in March after Ibrox criticism

The SPFL has now scheduled a meeting with all 42 of its member clubs to take place in March after it came in for criticism from Rangers and five other clubs, according to BBC Sport.

The news outlet reported on its website on Friday (16 February) that the SPFL is “confident” the discussion will answer the “serious concerns” raised by the Gers, Aberdeen, Motherwell, Livingston, St Johnstone and St Mirren about the response to the handling of its recent Independent Governance report.

After the six clubs called for the league’s bosses to attend a meeting on 27 February, the SPFL has now confirmed the matter will be discussed on 19 March, with consultant Henderson Loggie, which was commissioned to put the report together, circulating its findings and clarifying its recommendations to all 42 clubs.

Rangers and fellow SPL clubs deserve answers

There is a chance that a resolution to this ongoing saga could now be found in March after the six clubs in question expressed their deep concern at how the independent review was handled.

The SPFL claimed that the statement those sides put together contained “factual inaccuracies”, so there is likely going to be some debate about how everyone can move forward.

Whatever happens, though, it must be in the best interests of Scottish football, rather than people at the top of the SPFL protecting themselves and their positions.

The league has made numerous errors in recent times, with chairman Murdoch MacLennan being forced to apologise to the Gers last year over a sponsorship dispute.

It’s hard to see a total agreement being reached between all of the parties given the obvious difference in opinion, but it will be interesting to see what the outcome of the meeting will be.
