Rangers: Kris Boyd wowed by what Ross County star George Wickens did at Ibrox – ‘Unbelievable’

Kris Boyd and Julian Warren were left wowed by Ross County goalkeeper George Wickens’ “unbelievable” performance against Rangers, despite the Light Blues’ win.

Philippe Clement’s side moved level on points with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership with a 3-1 at Ibrox on Wednesday (14 February) thanks to a brace from Cyriel Dessers and a late header from John Souttar.

Even though the Gers claimed all three points, it was County keeper Wickens who stole the majority of the plaudits with his magnificent effort to deny Todd Cantwell one of many to blow Kris Boyd away during the clash.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Wednesday (14 February, 21:32) he said: “John Lundstram has just had another shot there, tipped over the bar by Wickens. He has had an unbelievable night.

“It was from 25 yards, Todd Cantwell just gets the ball at his feet and just rifles a shot, you thought it was going to nestle in the top corner, but Wickens got across, got a hand to it and just touched it onto the bar. It was an unbelievable save.”

Warren was quick to agree, saying: “He is a man inspired tonight, George Wickens, that’s the 15th save that he’s made in this game the Ross County keeper, he is pretty much single-handily keeping the score at 2-1 and keeping Ross County in with a chance of maybe leaving Ibrox with something.”

Rangers couldn’t thwart unbelievable George Wickens

In all honesty, Rangers should have waltzed past Ross County on Wednesday, but Wickens’ incredible display between the posts kept the away side in the clash and without him it could have really got ugly.

The County stopper pulled off a number of fantastic saves to deny almost every Rangers player on the night. Had anyone else between the posts, Clement’s side could well have registered double digits such was their overall dominance.

Philippe Clement would have been frustrated by the lack of impact Nicolas Raskin made for Rangers

Clement won’t be expecting to be in the market for a new keeper for a while, with the Gers making it clear that they don’t expect Jack Butland to be going anywhere anytime soon, however, they shouldn’t look past Wickens if they need a new number one.

Rangers may be slightly concerned that they weren’t able to convert more of their chances. If they want to pip Celtic to the title this season, they are going to have to become more clinical in the final third.
