Rangers: BBC pundit stunned as ‘incredible’ Scottish record shattered in win v Ross County
Neil McCann was left stunned after a stat emerged from Ross County goalkeeper George Wickens who broke the Scottish record for the most saves in a match during a 3-1 Rangers triumph on Wednesday.
Philippe Clement’s men moved level on points with Old Firm rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership in a frantic win over Ross County at Ibrox (14 February) – a game which saw them record 23 shots on target.
Two goals from Cyriel Dessers and a John Souttar header ensured the Light Blues made the most of their game in hand and are only in second because of goals scored.
However, on another night, Clement’s men could well have grabbed top spot if not for County goalkeeper Wickens who shattered the Scottish record with a whopping 19 saves in the match.
And McCann was left stunned on BBC Sportscene (14 February). Host John Sutherland asked: “Most Rangers fans would have wanted a bigger scoreline?”
McCann responded: “Listen, they did everything but get the required goals and Wickens played a huge part in that and just banged out a quite incredible stat about the number of saves in a match.”
Rangers top spot dream hampered by incredible goalkeeping at Ibrox
It was indeed quite an incredible amount of saves from Wicken who enjoyed an absolute blinder at Ibrox and on another day, the Gers could well have scored five goals which ensured top spot for them.
Credit to the 22-year-old shot-stopper whose performance would sure have raised a number of eyebrows within the Rangers recruitment team if they’re ever looking for a young goalkeeper in future.
However, you have to beat what’s in front of you, at all costs, and Clement’s men certainly achieved what they needed to despite the amount of missed chances.
When you’re fighting in a title race, a win no matter how small or big it may be, really doesn’t matter. Clement will have urged his team when the day begins, to just ensure they get the three points.
The pressure certainly is now on Celtic and Brendan Rodgers with Hoops fans feeling the pressure after yet another Gers win.
Clement’s transformation at Ibrox is impacting those at Parkhead and the Light Blues are doing what they need to in order to lift the spirits and optimism within the fans at Ibrox but there is still a long way to go.

Rangers are sure to face more and more goalkeepers like Wickens in that kind of form, but all they can do is ensure they get the three points because Celtic may just slip up soon which they can take great advantage of.
In other Rangers news, Aberdeen manager Neil Warnock must be living in Cuckoo Land after an absurd comment made regarding the Light Blues and Celtic.
