Rangers: Charlie Mulgrew slams Cyriel Dessers as he agrees with Ibrox transfer verdict

Charlie Mulgrew has criticised Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers, suggesting that the 29-year-old is not clinical enough in front of goal.

While speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (13 February), the ex-Celtic centre-back agreed with a supporter who called in to share his concerns over the number nine position at Rangers.

The fan suggested that Dessers is not a player who will “bag you goals in the biggest games” and is concerned that the club didn’t bring in a new striker during January.

Mulgrew added, “Dessers looks to me as if he needs three chances before he can score, three or four chances.

“If they hit the balls over the top in behind for Dessers, I wouldn’t fancy him to score and I think they missed a trick there by not signing Lawrence Shankland or Bojan Miovski.”

Rangers and Philippe Clement need goals

On paper, Dessers hasn’t made the worst of starts to life at Ibrox following his arrival from Serie A outfit Cremonese during the summer (Sky Sports News, 6 July).

He has so far netted eight times and provided two assists in his 21 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, with 12 goals and seven assists overall in all competitions.

While this seems like a decent return for a player adapting to his new club, those at Ibrox will have much higher expectations from their forward players, especially as they look to hunt down Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic.

Philippe Clement would have been frustrated by the lack of impact Nicolas Raskin made for Rangers

The Gers are just three points behind the Hoops with a game in hand and could move level on points with their fierce rivals with victory over Ross County at Ibrox on Wednesday 14 February.

If Rangers were to win by a margin of three or more goals, they would move above Celtic on goal difference, which highlights the importance of finding the back of the net for Clement and his players when it comes to the title race.
