Rangers: James Taylor shares financial update at Ibrox ahead of summer transfer window

James Taylor says remaining free of financial losses is going to be a “challenging target” for Rangers, but he expects funds to be available to bring in more new signings in the summer.

The Gers’ chief finance officer, who was appointed last year, shared an update on the club’s financial situation in an exclusive interview with Stevie Clifford for Rangers Review [12 February].

Rangers spent around £20million as part of a squad overhaul last summer and brought in Mohammed Diomande for a reported £4.5million in January, while Fabio Silva and Oscar Cortes arrived on loan.

Asked about Rangers’ plans going forward, and how they go about avoiding making mass losses, Taylor said: “There are a number of different facets around how we make that go away.

“I think you will see across various different football clubs that that is a challenging target, to be clear, but I think it is one that we should set ourselves and that we believe as an exec and a board that we can deliver against.

“Again there are funds there that we will look to utilise and build the squad with. While we recognise it in one year, the cash benefit comes through a number of different years.

“As I say, it is important that the football board and the finance world are fully joined up and I think we are beginning to see the merits and benefits of that football board as we move forward.”

Rangers boss Clement should be backed in summer transfer window

Rangers have learned the hard way about the importance of remaining clear of debt.

The financial position has not been great in recent times, but the club is now being managed in a much more professional way.

The key for any club is to build a successful squad while at the same time remaining in the black, which the Gers are on course to doing.

While last summer’s transfer business was questionable, the way the club went about their business in January was a lot better.

There is now a joined up feel between Philippe Clement and those who deal with the money side of things.

Unlike last year, there is no need for huge changes to be made to the squad in the summer transfer window.

Clement has already showed what he is capable of and will need just a couple of players to bolster what he already has.

The Gers are in a good place both on and off the field right now, and long may that continue.

In other Rangers news, Hugh Keevins is a huge fan of something Clement said to reporters last week.
