John Brown shares Rangers and Celtic title race verdict in fresh ‘pressure’ admission
Rangers’ title race with Celtic will go down to the wire and may even be decided by “goal difference” this season, according to John Brown.
Philippe Clement’s Light Blues sit three points behind Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops and can move top of the Scottish Premiership with a 3-0 win over Ross County on Wednesday (14 February).
Momentum is with the Gers and while they may be many pundits’ favourites, former Ibrox hero Brown thinks both teams will still have a few “wobbles” and nothing will be decided until the last minute.
Speaking on PLZ Soccer’s X account (12 February) he said: “You can’t even talk about that, I think they’re playing against a team that won a treble last season and they’re flying. We’re in a good position now to peg them back, which we have.
“It starts to get interesting now, who can handle the pressure of being top of the league? But we’ve got a chance, the manager will just want to win the game on Wednesday, you don’t even think about a score.
“There’s a long way to go. This league will go right until the last game of the season, honestly, it will probably go down to the Old Firm games and it might be goal difference, that’s how tight it is. The good thing is we’ve got momentum, Celtic have had a few wobbles and I’m sure there will be a few wobbles to come.
“The way that we’re playing, I’m really confident that we can really put Celtic under pressure.”
Rangers and Celtic fighting over goal difference for the title
Since Clement arrived in Glasgow, Rangers have been the team to beat in Scotland. Barring a single slip-up in December’s Old Firm clash where the Gers faced some questionable decisions, the Light Blues have been almost faultless.
However, those sorts of matches can be season-defining and Clement’s side may be made to regret their poor performances in the first two derbies of the campaign come the end of the title race.
So far this season, the title race has ebbed and flowed between the two sides and it would be naive to assume that there won’t be any late twists in the coming months and something as unimportant as goal difference may become season-defining.
Hopefully, the Gers will avoid a late wobble and will be able to continue their push for at least a domestic treble, if not a quadruple this term.
